In addition, the applicant must provide a valid reason for owning a firearm, such as self-defence, crop protection, or sports shooting, with self-defence being the most commonly cited reason.

Apply for the License

The application for a gun license must be submitted to the local licensing authority, which is usually the District Magistrate (DM) or the Police Commissioner in metropolitan cities.

Applicants can submit the application online through the NDAL-ALIS (National Database of Arms Licenses – Arms License Issuance System) portal or visit the local commissioner’s office for assistance.

During the application process, the applicant must fill out Form A, submit identity and address proof, state the reason for requiring a firearm, upload passport-size photographs, and pay the applicable application fee.

Police Verification

After the application is submitted, the local police conduct a background verification of the applicant.

This verification stage generally takes between one and three months to complete.

During this process, the police review the applicant’s criminal history, collect feedback from neighbours, and evaluate the threat perception or reason for requesting the firearm.

Interview / Review by Authorities

Following police verification, the applicant may be called for an interview with the District Magistrate’s office or the Police Commissioner.

During this interview, the authorities assess the legitimacy of the applicant’s reason for owning a firearm and determine whether granting the license is justified.

License Approval

If the application is approved, the applicant receives an arms license that specifies the type of firearm permitted, such as a pistol, revolver, or shotgun.

The license will also indicate the area of validity, which may be restricted to a district, a state, or valid across all of India.

Once the license is issued, the individual is legally permitted to purchase a firearm from an authorized dealer.

Purchase and Registration

After obtaining the license, the applicant can purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer.

Once the purchase is completed, the make, model, and serial number of the firearm are officially recorded on the arms license for legal registration.

Training and Safe Storage

In some states, authorities may require the license holder to complete basic firearms safety training.

Additionally, the license holder must ensure that the firearm is stored securely at home to prevent misuse or unauthorized access.

Time Required

Typically, 2–6 months, but it can take longer depending on the state and verification process.
